A Lolita dress is the grown-up answer to wanting a princess dress for your birthday: a skirt held out by a petticoat, a fitted and lined bodice, and lace and ribbon that are part of the construction rather than printed on. These are the one-pieces (OP) and jumperskirts (JSK) in the archive, from pastel cake prints to black velvet, all made in small batches by independent Chinese and Japanese ateliers.

Sweet Lolita is the classic birthday look: cream, pink and mint, with strawberries, cakes and sweets in the print, and a bow on everything. Classic Lolita suits a birthday tea party or a dinner better, in florals, jacquard and muted wine or ivory. A black gothic dress is an equally good birthday dress if that is what you actually wear. On the garment itself, an OP is one finished piece with sleeves and is the easiest choice for a long day, while a JSK needs a blouse underneath and changes character with the blouse you pick.
VivyVeil holds no stock of its own. A piece marked in stock is bought from the atelier after you order, inspected against the listing, then shipped. A preorder or deposit piece is made in a production batch first, and batches run on the atelier's schedule, which can be weeks or months. If your birthday is a fixed date, prefer in-stock pieces, order early, and leave room for an exchange if the size is wrong. Each product page states which kind of piece it is.
The petticoat matters more than any accessory: without one the skirt hangs flat and the dress stops reading as a princess dress. Choose a moderate one if you will be sitting at a table for hours. Add headwear, either a KC headbow, a bonnet or a small hat, and shoes with a rounded toe. Matching the lace of the headwear to the lace of the dress makes the whole coordinate look finished.
Yes. Lolita is adult fashion, cut from bust and waist measurements in adult sizes, and it is one of the most common things people wear to a birthday tea party in China and Japan. It reads as a princess dress without reading as a costume, because the fabric, lining and petticoat do the work rather than glitter or a printed bodice.
As early as you can. In-stock pieces are bought and inspected after you order, then shipped internationally. Preorder and deposit pieces wait for the atelier's production batch, which can take weeks or months. If the date cannot move, choose a piece marked in stock and allow time for an exchange.
A petticoat under the skirt for volume, a blouse under a JSK (an OP already has sleeves), and bloomers or shorts for comfort. Most of the shape comes from the petticoat, so if a dress looks flat in photos, that is usually the piece to change.
