What most people picture when they say princess dress, a fitted bodice, a skirt that stands out on its own, lace, ribbon and puff sleeves, is Sweet and Classic Lolita when an adult wears it. In Chinese the same dresses are casually called 公主裙, and in Japanese the most ornate end of the style is called hime (princess) Lolita. These are the sweet and classic dresses currently in the archive.

The difference is construction. A costume princess dress is usually unlined polyester with the decoration printed or glued on and nothing holding the skirt out. A Lolita dress has a lined bodice, shirring or lacing at the back so it fits, lace and ribbon sewn in, and is cut to be worn over a petticoat that gives the skirt its shape. It is made to be worn many times, to a party, a tea room or a museum, not once.
Sweet Lolita is the pastel, bow-heavy version: pink, cream and mint, playful prints, and a rounder bell silhouette. Classic Lolita is the quieter version: florals, jacquard and embroidery in wine, ivory and dusty rose, a softer A-line, and details borrowed from rococo and Victorian dress. Both are princess dresses; sweet reads as a fairytale, classic as a portrait. Hime Lolita sits at the ornate end of either, with crowns, bonnets and a lot of lace.
Birthdays are the most common reason to buy a first one, followed by tea parties, photoshoots, conventions and weddings as a guest (in a colour that is not white). Plenty of wearers simply wear them out. A dress with a removable bow or a plainer print crosses between occasions most easily.
They overlap. Princess dress describes a look; Lolita is a specific fashion with its own garments (JSK, OP, blouse, petticoat, headwear) and conventions, such as the skirt length and the petticoat silhouette. Sweet and Classic Lolita are the parts of that fashion closest to what princess dress means.
Yes, they are adult clothing. Sizes are given by the atelier in centimetres for bust, waist and length, and many bodices have shirring or lacing that adds a few centimetres of range. Compare the chart with a dress you already own rather than with a letter size.
The ateliers mostly sell only to Chinese addresses, in limited runs. VivyVeil buys the piece in China on your behalf, inspects it against the listing, and forwards it to you internationally.
